Oh Scrap blog hop

GIVEAWAY CLOSED- Robby H. has been notified

Welcome to the first stop on the Oh Scrap blog hop.

Oh Scrap was just the working title for this book, but it stuck in a good way.

I had accumilated a notebook full of “stuff” in case I ever wrote a book. Tips, ideas, notes, colors filled the pages. And then, dah, dah dahdun, mid-March 2016 I decided to write a book. (See previous post about Lissa 2.0)

What could little ol’ me offer in a book that so many other authors, quilt designers and artists have not already covered? I work behind the scenes with some of the top designers in the industry. Some of my friends are the  creatives of all creatives, intimidating to say the least. Some of these people I mentioned in the book and some you will visit along the hop. With the help of my publisher and the people listed above, I got out of my head and just made quilts, quilts that I loved for the process and the color.

While my definition of scraps may be different than most.

  • a small piece or amount of something, especially one that is left over after the greater part has been used is the official definition of the word.

My scraps are somewhat intentionally created. When I am squaring up fabrics, i go ahead and cut a larger strip ranging from 1.5″ to 3.5″, just in case. My scraps are bits and pieces from precuts or by combining precuts from different designers.

All of my quilts are a work in progress. I find a color palette that intrigues me and start to accumulate or do what Susan Ache refers to as a fabric pull.  Gathering all the fabrics from scrap bins and fabric shelves and then start the process of elimination.

Have you ever walked in to a paint store and grabbed the perfect color on your first try? Not me. It is a decision made by comparison and contrast.  Sometimes you have to take home 30 swatches to find the perfect one.. Scraps are a palette of paint swatches. On your fabric pull, 100 fabrics may be pulled to decide on the perfect 40.

In Oh Scrap, I talk about color. I love color. I love reading about it. I love studying the personality of color and its influence in fashion, relationships and even in the classroom.  I probably should have named the book, Oh Color. Not so catchy of a title, is it?

What I don’t love about color is all the fancy rules and big words about defining those color rules. That is why I quilt and don’t paint. I could /can paint. I earned an art scholarship that I never ended up using. I grew up  around art, working with my hands and  obsessed by the angles of architecture. (mother- artist, father-engineer)

Now that I have described my fancy self taught education, I am sure you want to learn color from me, right? What I do hope is that you enjoy the process, explore and experiment with scraps of fabric and learn color along the way is a bonus. Don’t concentrate on perfection but delight in the stories of your work. Somewhere along the way, I forgot to tell my stories and Oh Scrap made me want to share some of my stories with you.

I am so excited for the release of this book! I love every single thing I’ve seen about it. Congrats to you on its release and on your 2 year anniversary as well.

  2. Traci Slomba says:

I love jelly rolls and I usually will cut a 2.5 inch strip off my fabric when I’m cutting for a new project and store by color in bins. If I buy a precut it may also be a layer cake for its versatility

  3. Pat H says:

Well, I have tons of charm packs, mostly because it’s so easy to pick them up cheap! But I think I should move up to layer cakes because sometimes a 5” Square just doesn’t cut it. Looks like a great book!!

  4. Kathy Reeves says:

Charm packs and layer cakes have always been the easiest for me to use. I love that I can get charm packs for a small investment, and have colors that push me out of my comfort zone, or that allow me to work in someone’s favorite colors.

  5. Karen Seitz says:

I love your quilts and color sense no matter how you came by it. I am an equal opportunity precut lover, and I have worked with charms, jelly rolls, layer cakes, jolly bars, and fat quarters already this year. Guess I should pull out some fat eighths and mini charms next!

  6. Carol Collier says:

I love scrappy quilts!! My favorite pre-cuts are charm squares — they can be used so many different ways. However, I just used a layer cake to make a quilt, and that was really enjoyable, too! I love all pre-cuts!! Love the quilts in you new book!!

  7. Lauren dalton says:

Mini charms are my favorite!! I just have to remember to buy more than two and buy a few yards of coordinating fabric in case it takes me a while to make a quilt and I can’t find the original fabric line! Lol

  8. Dawn F. says:

I like fat quarters because once you’ve cut what you need for your quilt, you usually end up with scraps that can be used later. I like all the other precuts as well but usually will end up using the entire thing at one time so don’t build up my stash as much.

  9. Adrienne says:

A favorite? Moda fabrics are so incredibly beautiful – any of them – how to choose a favorite? It’s a conundrum. I would have to say my favorite precuts right now are mini-charms. It has everything to do with my loving to make Mini quilts. Plus, I’ve fallen in love with scrappy. Mini charms work perfectly for a scrappy look, plus all of those 2 1/2 squares I cut up from my stash. It’s endless fun, pleasure, and beauty.

  10. Beth T. says:

My favorite precuts are layer cakes, as they are big enough to get a real feel for the fabric line. I would have said fat quarter bundles but those are dream indulgences for me.

  11. Sandra DeMers says:

My favorite precut is a fat quarter bundle because there is enough fabric for many options and sometimes with leftovers!

  12. Helen G says:

I’m looking forward to seeing this book because I’ve loved all the examples I’ve seen so far! I know a few of the quilts have been on my to-do list for awhile. I love scrappy quilts!

Although I love all the Moda precuts, right now my favorite is the layer cake. I like it because it gives me more options than a charm pack. If I want a charm pack I can cut each piece into four. Or cut two 5″ squares and save the rest for another project.

  13. Raquel Goyen says:

Favorite precuts? I use FQs most, but Jelly Rolls are just so irresistible! This looks like such a fantastic book!

  14. Donna Cutting says:

Scrap quilt are so full of our love of fabric. I like charm packs and jelly rolls. Thanks for giveaway, my stash is waiting for this book.

  15. Siobhan Cunnane says:

Hmmm, asking me to choose a favorite precut is like asking me to choose a favorite child. I love FQs in general because I love scrappy quilts, followed closely by jelly rolls. Then charm packs. Then… you get the idea! 😉

  16. Janet Rice says:

My favorite precut depends on what I’m making. Right now, I’m working on a quilt using 2.5″ squares, so I’m cutting up a jelly roll. I like the variety that precuts can provide.

  17. Debbie Russell says:

Scraps make the best quilts. I am an intentional scrap quilter. Love to coordinate colors from other quilts to make new. I always buy extra fabric for this purpose.

  18. Nicole says:

My favorite pre cuts are charm packs. I don’t quilt comforters very much, but have an amazing pattern, or rather, ‘recipe’, for tote bags that utilize charm squares of a similar hue for the top border, and after that… I went mad for charm squares. It’s effectively the only pre cut type I collect. So far… 🙂

  19. Kristy Wilkinson says:

I am glad to see your comments section is now a part of the post! I love fat quarters because they have so many possibilities wrapped up in just an 18×22 inch piece of fabric. They are addicting! Your book looks amazing. Thanks for sharing with us. K- lkw2x6-apq@yahoo.com

  20. Eleanor Moriarty says:

Would love a copy of this book! My favourites are scrap quilts – it feels like you get a quilt for free 🙂

  21. Mona Roberts says:

I’m going “old school” with fat quarters as my fav precut, too. Layer cakes are so usable as well. Always root around in the scrap bin before pulling yardage so I’m looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of your book. So pretty!!

  22. Kathleen says:

I LOVE. LOVE. LOVE the itty bitty Moda Candies. They are so cute and I can make darling small quilts with them. Great way to preview a line of fabric, too.

  23. Carol says:

I love the versatility of fat quarters so they are my favourite. Looking forward to your book as I’m hoping this is the “ultimate year of using my scraps!” Thanks for all your hard work and sharing it with the rest of us.

  24. Terri Staats says:

I’ve never meet a pre-cut I didn’t like. I guess if I had to pick, I’d choose the charm pack. I tend to work with smaller pieces and projects so this works best in my projects. I love working with the mini charm packs to, but I can make 4 of those out of a charm pack if need be!! Can’t wait to see you new book!! Congratulation!

  25. Emma Somero says:

I love your book (and scrappy quilts)! Favorite pre-cut? That’s a toss up between charm packs, and a jelly roll!

    • Debbie Russell says:

Charm squares are such a wonderful invention for busy sewists. The variety is always in excellent supply.
Then the 10″ squares, and jellyrolls.
