Oh Scrap blog hop

GIVEAWAY CLOSED- Robby H. has been notified

Welcome to the first stop on the Oh Scrap blog hop.

Oh Scrap was just the working title for this book, but it stuck in a good way.

I had accumilated a notebook full of “stuff” in case I ever wrote a book. Tips, ideas, notes, colors filled the pages. And then, dah, dah dahdun, mid-March 2016 I decided to write a book. (See previous post about Lissa 2.0)

What could little ol’ me offer in a book that so many other authors, quilt designers and artists have not already covered? I work behind the scenes with some of the top designers in the industry. Some of my friends are the  creatives of all creatives, intimidating to say the least. Some of these people I mentioned in the book and some you will visit along the hop. With the help of my publisher and the people listed above, I got out of my head and just made quilts, quilts that I loved for the process and the color.

While my definition of scraps may be different than most.

  • a small piece or amount of something, especially one that is left over after the greater part has been used is the official definition of the word.

My scraps are somewhat intentionally created. When I am squaring up fabrics, i go ahead and cut a larger strip ranging from 1.5″ to 3.5″, just in case. My scraps are bits and pieces from precuts or by combining precuts from different designers.

All of my quilts are a work in progress. I find a color palette that intrigues me and start to accumulate or do what Susan Ache refers to as a fabric pull.  Gathering all the fabrics from scrap bins and fabric shelves and then start the process of elimination.

Have you ever walked in to a paint store and grabbed the perfect color on your first try? Not me. It is a decision made by comparison and contrast.  Sometimes you have to take home 30 swatches to find the perfect one.. Scraps are a palette of paint swatches. On your fabric pull, 100 fabrics may be pulled to decide on the perfect 40.

In Oh Scrap, I talk about color. I love color. I love reading about it. I love studying the personality of color and its influence in fashion, relationships and even in the classroom.  I probably should have named the book, Oh Color. Not so catchy of a title, is it?

What I don’t love about color is all the fancy rules and big words about defining those color rules. That is why I quilt and don’t paint. I could /can paint. I earned an art scholarship that I never ended up using. I grew up  around art, working with my hands and  obsessed by the angles of architecture. (mother- artist, father-engineer)

Now that I have described my fancy self taught education, I am sure you want to learn color from me, right? What I do hope is that you enjoy the process, explore and experiment with scraps of fabric and learn color along the way is a bonus. Don’t concentrate on perfection but delight in the stories of your work. Somewhere along the way, I forgot to tell my stories and Oh Scrap made me want to share some of my stories with you.

Here are some of my friends that are going to share their stories with you.

I love scrap quilts. I was introduced to scrap quilts by a half square triangle exchange by my quilt guild. The quilt I made with these wonderful scrappy quilt pieces won a honorable mention ribbon at our local quilt show. Jelly rolls work well for these colorful pieces to my quilts. I would love a chance to win a copy of “Oh, Scrap” for more ideas for my scraps.

  2. Kathy in WV says:

I’m torn between choosing jelly rolls or layer cakes. Both are so versatile……but I think jelly rolls WIN by a small margin! Right now I’m totally enamored with Ville Fleurie fabric by French General for Moda. The colors complement my decor as well as my soul. Blessings…the book looks like a treasure. Thanks for a chance to win.

  3. Carole S. says:

I think all the precursor are pure genius, even though I resisted them for quite a few years. Now I totally get that they let me get that perfect sampling of a bigger variety of colors and patterns than I could ever have otherwise. My favorite (today) is the layer cake—such a versatile size! Congratulations on your book!

  4. Carla J says:

My favorite Moda pre-cut is a layer cake. I enjoy the option of all the cuts I can make with that size square. If i add a jelly roll with it, there is sashing, border, binding, cornerstones to go with it.

  5. Joan R says:

I think my favorite precut is the layer cake. It can be sub cut so many ways and is enough for a small quilt! Plus you really get a feel for the pattern. Looking forward to your book. It looks beautiful!

  6. Chellie Tetlock says:

I have fallen in love with Corey Yoders Lulu Lane fabric line. I have finally gotten the final material needed to make the quilt I want to make. Ironically enough it is a scrap quilt. Probably because most of my quilts would fall inder that title. I absolutely love the way scrap quilts look. They simplicity (So it appears) of the design and the use of different colors can change the quilt completely. I look forward to your book to learn more about color and find some new designs that I can build off of. Yay. So exciting. My email is Chellie.tetlock@sunraygroup.ca

My email is Chellie.tetlock@sunraygroup.ca I love fat quarter bundles the most because I enjoy making large quilts. The fat quarters allow me to make any pattern I find to showvase the beautiful fabrics.

  7. Becky Rabalais says:

I love fat quarter bundles. I love cutting fabric so I can cut a fat quarter to the size I need. Scrap quilt are my favorite. So oozing forward to your book!

  8. Linda L. says:

I initially would have said that jelly roll strips are my favorite pre-cut but my current project is using a fat quarter bundle and that is working well. Not sure I want to pick a favorite as I have used them all and depending on the project, they are genius. What a time saver.

  9. Sandy Allen says:

I am loving layer cakes right now. First it was jelly rolls, then charm packs, and now layer cakes. Working my way through them all! 🙂

Congratulations on the book. It would be a welcome addition to my library!

  10. Karen Blodgett says:

I like fat quarters, something to purchase when on a shop hop and gather a variety of colors and prints for future projects.

  11. Tracie says:

Charm squares are my favorite! I have a lot on hand, already for designated projects, and I have used many charm packs to make baby quilts and table toppers.

  12. Mary Kastner says:

YOur book looks fabulous! I love layer cakes myself. I like the variety and you can add a bit of yardage and come up with a spectacular quilt! Thanks for the chance to win. Congratulations on your first book !

    Mary

  13. Jean Etheridge says:

I like the flexibility of the layer cake, but my box of charms can be a treasure box when I am looking for just the one right piece of fabric.

  14. Elizabeth Dewett says:

My favorite Moda precuts are charm packs. They are the perfect size for me. I love the idea of your book and the quilts you showcased are beautiful. Thanks for the chance to win.

Layer cakes for me! Love that I can pick up one that matches the recipient’s taste and make a nice size lap quilt. Also really enjoying those Cake Mix papers! Many congrats on your first book!

  18. Kay Roberts says:

Congratulations Fat quarter bundles are the best. I can do a lot of different designs with them. I’ll be ordering your book.

  19. Helen Thorn says:

You new book looks amazing. LOVE scrap quilts. Thank you for a chance to win one. I love Moda charm packs. Can’t live without them.

  20. Kim Jenkins says:

Love the quilts in your book and the one with the little ballerina is so beautiful. Thank you for the giveaway.

  21. Karen says:

congratulations on your book – if I do not win it I will need to buy it 🙂 I love fat quarters and jelly rolls – but any pre-cut will do for me I find a use for all of them – love Moda fabrics

  22. Sandra Austill says:

Congratulations on your first book. I am building my scrap stash in anticipation of making my first truly scrap quilt. I am in love with Moda’s Farmhouse Reds and have a pattern picked out to use them in.

  23. Darice Cecil says:

Oh my….you mean I have to choose! I love all recuts – I call them my quilt miracles! But if you go buy the number of quilts I’ve made by pre-cut type…I guess I’ve used the jelly roll 2-1/2″ the most. However, I do have quite a few PBIBs (Pre-Baked In Bags) pre-quilts using 10″ layer cakes. The by far the most PBIBs are my GMO-PCs. These are quilts made with more than one type (gene) of pre-cut creating a quilt of unknown origin!

  24. Jan B. says:

I recently found in my stash some Mon Ami charm squares I purchased a while ago. Wow! What a find, perfect to add to a current scrappy project. I enjoy approaching color in the same way you have described above. Forget the rules. If I like it, it works.

  25. Suzanne E Adler says:

I love a good layer cake — so much you can do with it. Although I do love a jelly roll too. I have made many quilts with those jelly rolls. And I do love those charms too – I can sew up a quick baby quilt with one! But Fat Quarters — so much you can do with those too. Do I have to pick just one? Congrats on the new book!

  26. Diane T says:

Usually fat quarters, but current favorite precuts are charm packs, especially when paired with a cupcake mix. Taking Kate Spain’s ‘Horizon’ to a sew day with friends today.

  27. Janet Deschamps says:

Love your scrappy quilts! My favorite precut is the charm pack, or FQ bundle- but I don’t think that qualifies as a precut! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  28. Vicki says:

I mostly buy fat quarter or charm square bundles – the fat quarters when I want to make something and charm squares just to have because I love the fabric!

  29. Sue gray says:

I’m always looking for new ways to use my stash. My goal is to make a quilt and to not buy any fabric to finish it. Your ideas have inspired new scrap quilts. Thanks so much!

  30. Becky S says:

I have been loving jelly rolls lately, but like using layer cakes too. Congrats on the beautiful book. Scrappy quilts are my favorite!!!

  31. Jennifer French says:

While fat quarter bundles are enticing, I go for the layer cake because of the expense…. and because of the guilt I feel buying a stack of fat quarters when I have “too much fabric”. (I know! That’s not a thing except around husbands)

Can’t wait to see your book!

  32. Flo Burton says:

The fat quarter bundles are my favorite because of the versatility for so many different scrappy quilts. Thank you for the opportunity to win your book.

  33. Pat Spurgeon says:

Recently I have been experimenting with layer cakes for the first time, along with the cake mix paper piecing. Love, love, love the results!

  34. Sandie says:

Congratulations! Looking forward to seeing this in person! As for my favorite precut? Fat Quarter bundles first, followed by layer capes and charm packs.

  35. Ranch Wife says:

Congratulations! I’m so excited about your book! I can’t wait to own it and I know everyone in my quilt group is going to want one too! Scrap quilts are always my favorite and they are the first ones my family reach for.
My favorite precut is the fat quarter simply because of the endless options, but I’ll admit that I have a collection of jellyrolls and layer cakes keeping all those fat quarters company, 🙂

  36. Pris Phillips says:

Oh Lissa!!! Huge congratulations on the release of your new book!! And what a wonderful way to celebrate the two year mark of that scary surgery!! So grateful we still have you!!! (Thank you Jesus!!) My favorite precut?? That’s hard because I love them all… for different reasons! My favorite is probably the Layer Cake because I can whip up a lap sized quilt fairly quickly using one. In fact, I’m heading to quilt retreat at a Dude Ranch in Idaho today… taking a layer cake, a Cake Mix, and a white layer cake to whip up a lovely quilt for a delightful elderly friend. Close second to the Layer Cake is her little sister, the Charm Square! I make baby quilts for our local NICU, and charm squares are my “go to” for many of these fast-n-easy Wee Ones quilts. Naturally I have a ton of scraps… so I think I will purchase your book today! If I win a copy, I’ll keep the autographed one and share the purchased one with a quilty friend! Blessings, Lissa! You are a treasure!! ❤️

  37. Thelma says:

I have two favorite Moda precuts, and I like them both equally well. First up is the layer cake. I love it for experimenting with new and different fabric. There’s just enough to make something worthwhile, but not a lot of funky leftovers that I won’t ever use. I always buy fat quarter bundle of my favorite designers. A bundle can make a wonderful quilt plus leftovers to be added to previous collections for a super fun scrappy quilt. Congratulations on the book Lissa, I can hardly wait for my book to be delivered, I’m sure it will be a wonderful read full of beautiful scrappy quilts.
