Oh Scrap blog hop

GIVEAWAY CLOSED- Robby H. has been notified

Welcome to the first stop on the Oh Scrap blog hop.

Oh Scrap was just the working title for this book, but it stuck in a good way.

I had accumilated a notebook full of “stuff” in case I ever wrote a book. Tips, ideas, notes, colors filled the pages. And then, dah, dah dahdun, mid-March 2016 I decided to write a book. (See previous post about Lissa 2.0)

What could little ol’ me offer in a book that so many other authors, quilt designers and artists have not already covered? I work behind the scenes with some of the top designers in the industry. Some of my friends are the  creatives of all creatives, intimidating to say the least. Some of these people I mentioned in the book and some you will visit along the hop. With the help of my publisher and the people listed above, I got out of my head and just made quilts, quilts that I loved for the process and the color.

While my definition of scraps may be different than most.

  • a small piece or amount of something, especially one that is left over after the greater part has been used is the official definition of the word.

My scraps are somewhat intentionally created. When I am squaring up fabrics, i go ahead and cut a larger strip ranging from 1.5″ to 3.5″, just in case. My scraps are bits and pieces from precuts or by combining precuts from different designers.

All of my quilts are a work in progress. I find a color palette that intrigues me and start to accumulate or do what Susan Ache refers to as a fabric pull.  Gathering all the fabrics from scrap bins and fabric shelves and then start the process of elimination.

Have you ever walked in to a paint store and grabbed the perfect color on your first try? Not me. It is a decision made by comparison and contrast.  Sometimes you have to take home 30 swatches to find the perfect one.. Scraps are a palette of paint swatches. On your fabric pull, 100 fabrics may be pulled to decide on the perfect 40.

In Oh Scrap, I talk about color. I love color. I love reading about it. I love studying the personality of color and its influence in fashion, relationships and even in the classroom.  I probably should have named the book, Oh Color. Not so catchy of a title, is it?

What I don’t love about color is all the fancy rules and big words about defining those color rules. That is why I quilt and don’t paint. I could /can paint. I earned an art scholarship that I never ended up using. I grew up  around art, working with my hands and  obsessed by the angles of architecture. (mother- artist, father-engineer)

Now that I have described my fancy self taught education, I am sure you want to learn color from me, right? What I do hope is that you enjoy the process, explore and experiment with scraps of fabric and learn color along the way is a bonus. Don’t concentrate on perfection but delight in the stories of your work. Somewhere along the way, I forgot to tell my stories and Oh Scrap made me want to share some of my stories with you.

Layer cakes are the most versatile precut because you can do so much with them. A Jelly roll is the second most used cut….in my opinion.

  2. Pam says:

I love fat quarters, and I love Civil War Reproduction fabrics. I always have plenty of scraps left over for future projects when using fat quarters!

  3. Lisa Marie says:

If fat quarters are considered pre-cuts then they are my favorite because I like to have plenty of fabric to work with. If you don’t count FQs then layer cakes are my favorite because they are versatile — I can cut the squares into a whole variety of shapes and sizes. But I always wonder, if I cut them up, does that defeat the purpose of pre-cuts?

  4. Jan Wills says:

I have your book already! Love it and am already in the planning stages for three of the quilts.
My favourite precut? All of them! So many quilt opportunities with each size, from jelly rolls to mini charm packs. Mix and match, throw in more colours and fabrics, and presto!
Magic happens and more quilts are created.

  5. Mary says:

I love the layer cakes; so many things you can do with them. I often just buy a charm pack though, just so I can touch all the beautiful fabrics!

  6. Carol C says:

I rarely use precuts but probably the charm packs are my favorite. This book looks wonderful for those of use who prefer to work with scraps. grannaishere at verizon dot net

  7. Gina M says:

I love fat quarter bundles…their pretty to look at and versatile when I force myself to untie the bundles and dive in!

  8. Connie M says:

Favorite precut is charm squares, they store so nicely so they are easy to retrive when one just wants to hold the magic. They make me smile and feel happy, even when they are not being used in a project. They help one dream of what might be the next project and bring sunshine even when the sun does not shine for whatever reason.

  9. Amber says:

I love charms and mini charms. I like that I can get a whole line of fabric for not very much $ by purchasing a charm pack, and I love mixing and matching designers or all the collections of one designer. I love mini charm packs because they are just so stinking cute, and I can get a “fix” of a line that I might not make into a quilt, but that I “need” to own! This book looks amazing!

  10. Kerry L. says:

I still love charm packs the most. Something about those 5inch squares gets me everytime!
Your new book looks fantastic! Congrats to you !

  11. Linda Haley says:

Love pre-cuts! My favorite pre-cut is
fat quarters. Sometimes I’m at a loss as
to what to make with the others. And I love
    Scrappy quilts!

  12. Melissa Gerber says:

I am a huge fan of pre-cuts. I love charm squares — the possibilities are endless. Congratulations on your new book! It looks delightful.

  13. Deb Worthman says:

I love working with fat quarters and charm packs. Sometimes it’s exciting to pull fat quarters to see what you can work with and sometimes I need to have it “matchy-matchy”. It all depends on my mood and if I know who it’s for.

  14. Sue H says:

My favorite pre-cuts would have to a Layer Cake. The 10″ squares are so versatile … cut them in 1/4s and get charm squares. Cut them again in 1/4s and get mini charms. They’re the perfect size for scrappy applique too!

  15. Carol C says:

My favourite precut is a fat quarter bundle, but I’m not adverse to jelly rolls, layer cakes, and charm packs – I have some of each of them. Just when I decide I don’t need a particular precut, something comes up and I NEED more. Like cake mixes, schnibble patterns, cupcake mixes, and now a jelly roll rug, And there’s always somebody who needs a quilt – like a new baby grandson. Not that I need a reason for more fabric!

  16. Nancy Hager says:

I love fat quarters. I can make so much with them. However, I have been known to buy all of the precuts for several fabric lines.

  17. Bunny says:

I love all precuts, but if I had to pick one, it would be fat quarters.

Your book looks like one that I would love!

  18. Kay McCaffery says:

I like layer cakes best because they are so versatile & work well for so many different patterns. Can’t wait to get a copy of your book & try to dwindle down my scraps.

  19. Kathleen Chenoweth says:

My fav is a layer cake! And my FAV is your new book that was in my mailbox TODAY❤️❤️

  20. Jocelyn says:

I like working with charm packs. Started using them a few years ago, and love how they are so easy to put something together. Thanks for the great book! It looks awesome.

  21. Jan says:

Love Fat quarters! Jelly rolls are my next favorite. l Can’t resist the colors and prints blending from one to the next around the roll. 😉 Diamonds, squares, triangles, strip sets…lots of ways to sew & cut them.

  22. Becky Cogan says:

I love the layer cakes and honey buns. You can cut a lot of pieces out of a layer cake and the honey buns are small to start withm

  23. Alice says:

I love fat quartes but I wouldn’t shake a stick at a layer cake or a jelly roll! What a delight to read about your story and more importantly, your recovery. Can’t wait to get a copy of your book. It looks truly fantastic!

  24. BJ says:

Looking over my stash, I was obviously enamored with fat quarters for a long, long time. I love the way the bundles speak to me, folded and stacked so neatly, but I couldn’t bear to cut into them! So my favorite precut for putting to good use is the layer cake. They don’t look as pretty on the shelf, but I sure do find them easier to play with.

  25. Christy Johnson says:

Layer cakes are probably my favorite precursor. I also really like jelly rolls and charm packs. Oh, I just love fabric in general. It doesn’t matter what size or shape. Give me pretty fabric and I’ll figure out how to make it into a beautiful quilt.

  26. Julie Kennedy says:

My favorite precuts are fat quarters, followed by layer cakes. I love the versatility of the larger size pieces.
Can’t wait to see your book?

  27. Deb says:

Layer cakes have become my favorite because I LOVE the cake mix papers. I’ve finished one quilt with them and have 2 more ready to go…..prior to this fixation it would have been FQ bundles.
