Oh Scrap blog hop

GIVEAWAY CLOSED- Robby H. has been notified

Welcome to the first stop on the Oh Scrap blog hop.

Oh Scrap was just the working title for this book, but it stuck in a good way.

I had accumilated a notebook full of “stuff” in case I ever wrote a book. Tips, ideas, notes, colors filled the pages. And then, dah, dah dahdun, mid-March 2016 I decided to write a book. (See previous post about Lissa 2.0)

What could little ol’ me offer in a book that so many other authors, quilt designers and artists have not already covered? I work behind the scenes with some of the top designers in the industry. Some of my friends are the  creatives of all creatives, intimidating to say the least. Some of these people I mentioned in the book and some you will visit along the hop. With the help of my publisher and the people listed above, I got out of my head and just made quilts, quilts that I loved for the process and the color.

While my definition of scraps may be different than most.

  • a small piece or amount of something, especially one that is left over after the greater part has been used is the official definition of the word.

My scraps are somewhat intentionally created. When I am squaring up fabrics, i go ahead and cut a larger strip ranging from 1.5″ to 3.5″, just in case. My scraps are bits and pieces from precuts or by combining precuts from different designers.

All of my quilts are a work in progress. I find a color palette that intrigues me and start to accumulate or do what Susan Ache refers to as a fabric pull.  Gathering all the fabrics from scrap bins and fabric shelves and then start the process of elimination.

Have you ever walked in to a paint store and grabbed the perfect color on your first try? Not me. It is a decision made by comparison and contrast.  Sometimes you have to take home 30 swatches to find the perfect one.. Scraps are a palette of paint swatches. On your fabric pull, 100 fabrics may be pulled to decide on the perfect 40.

In Oh Scrap, I talk about color. I love color. I love reading about it. I love studying the personality of color and its influence in fashion, relationships and even in the classroom.  I probably should have named the book, Oh Color. Not so catchy of a title, is it?

What I don’t love about color is all the fancy rules and big words about defining those color rules. That is why I quilt and don’t paint. I could /can paint. I earned an art scholarship that I never ended up using. I grew up  around art, working with my hands and  obsessed by the angles of architecture. (mother- artist, father-engineer)

Now that I have described my fancy self taught education, I am sure you want to learn color from me, right? What I do hope is that you enjoy the process, explore and experiment with scraps of fabric and learn color along the way is a bonus. Don’t concentrate on perfection but delight in the stories of your work. Somewhere along the way, I forgot to tell my stories and Oh Scrap made me want to share some of my stories with you.

Love everyone of these designers and have to say they feel like family even though I have not many of them…..think this new book looks wonderful and can’t wait to see it.
    Thanks

I’m s scrapy quilter. I love the color, texture, movement and variety that being scrappy does for a quilt. My fat quarter stash is big, so I need lots of ideas.

  3. Robby H. says:

Fat quarters make me very happy. Big enough that the possibilities seem endless, small enough to sample a whole variety without (too much) guilt. I’m so excited about this book, it went straight to my Wish List as soon as I saw it. So winning a copy from you would be wonderful.

  4. Sandy Evenson-Hagen says:

It is fun to ‘meet’ favorite designers and learn more about them. This book looks like a wonderful collaboration of Quilt Talent!

  5. Michelr says:

I’ve got plenty of scraps but not sure what to do with them! I’ve got several layer cakes, which are my favorite, that are waiting for the perfect project.

  6. JaneR says:

I love layer cakes since they can be cut into so many shapes for different blocks and I can also use Moda cake mixes for perfect triangles! Looks like a wonderful book!

  7. Amy L says:

I’m an art major, and kind of floundered in color theory. (My concentration was in sculpture…) Your scrap quilts really shine, and it would be lovely to read what you think of color in your quilts. And my favorite precuts are charm packs.

  8. Dixie W says:

I usually go for layer cakes or jelly rolls or charm packs(you get my drift). I always have some left as I usually get more than I need. This book is right up my alley.

  9. Carolyn Sefkow says:

I tend to alternate between planned and scrappy – after 5-6 quilts the scraps add up and I feel that I should do something with them!!

  10. Pat S says:

I love fat quarter bundles but I usually just buy a charm pack – after I see each of the fabrics in the collection, then I’ll order yardage of the ones I can’t live without! Can’t wait to read Oh Scrap!

  11. Bev Gunn says:

I am the one at guild that everyone hands off scraps they no longer want to and I take them home and size them out and, sometimes, even sew them together! Love the fun of mixing fabrics and making something usable out of what others consider trash! OH, SCRAP looks like a fun book!

  12. Ronda says:

99.9% of the quilts I make are scrappy ~ so, yes, I would love to win a copy of this beautiful book! Fat quarters are my favorite!

  13. Becky says:

Fat quarters are great but sometimes I get overwhelmed with all the choices. I would love to learn how to use the colors better in my quilts. Your book sounds fantastic.
    Can’t wait to get it.

  14. Vickie Mone says:

I love love love scrappy – my splendid sampler blocks were all scrappy. Thanks for writing such a great book. I am always interested in ways to use my scraps.

  15. Kay says:

I love a fat quarter bundle as it is so useful for many things, and I have to admit to buying jelly rolls just to use as scrappy binding. Thank you for a great giveaway. x

  16. Shari Kersey says:

I like layer cakes! You can do so much: cut your own 2.5″ squares, 5″ squares, 2.5″ x 10″ strips, etc.

  17. Jerri says:

Pat Sloan is my favorite quilt teacher/designer! She does so much for the quilters in her Facebook Quilt Along group! Learning about her in 2014 changed my quilting journey for the best. Thank you for the giveaway and for highlighting Pat!

  18. Margaret Mead says:

Very hard to pick my favorite precut. I’ve used most of them. I do like fat quarter bundles, fat eighths and jelly rolls. Can’t wait to see your book. Thanks for the chance to win.

  19. Gail K says:

Fat quarters are the “scraps” in my stash. I always like to have plenty of my favorites in a size that can be used in more than one quilt. Charm packs & layer cakes don’t call to me like fat quarters (though I have these types of precursor too ha ha.). Your new book is so inspiring! It is definitely on my wish list!

  20. Abby Latimer says:

I’m so excited to see this book! Can’t wait to make a few of these beauties! Favorite Precut is a Layer Cake!

  21. Anita B. says:

My favorite line of fabrics is always Moda, no matter who the designer is, the fabrics are gorgeous. My fav precut would have to be the fat quarter, they give great variety to a quilt, yet enough fabric for the design!

I love the lineup of guests for this blog hop!

  22. Dian Hoffman says:

Moda represents a quilter’s buffet. I find layer cakes to be most useful in supplementing my current stash of scraps. Fat quarters are my favorite for larger projects. My oh my, what did we do to achieve the scrappy look before their conception. Your book appears to be the “kick” I need to increase my productivity and use the scraps I have while giving me a reason do purchase lovely, newly designed precuts to increase visual appeal.

  23. Beth Esser says:

I just went to my first scrap retreat and I found out that I have too many scraps and they are very unorganized, to say the least! Sure could use some help with this book

  24. Beth Esser says:

I really like layer cakes oh and charm squares, and now those tiny little 2 1/2” mini charms , not to mention jelly rolls !
