Welcome to the first stop on the Oh Scrap blog hop.
Oh Scrap was just the working title for this book, but it stuck in a good way.
I had accumilated a notebook full of “stuff” in case I ever wrote a book. Tips, ideas, notes, colors filled the pages. And then, dah, dah dahdun, mid-March 2016 I decided to write a book. (See previous post about Lissa 2.0)
What could little ol’ me offer in a book that so many other authors, quilt designers and artists have not already covered? I work behind the scenes with some of the top designers in the industry. Some of my friends are the creatives of all creatives, intimidating to say the least. Some of these people I mentioned in the book and some you will visit along the hop. With the help of my publisher and the people listed above, I got out of my head and just made quilts, quilts that I loved for the process and the color.
While my definition of scraps may be different than most.
- a small piece or amount of something, especially one that is left over after the greater part has been used is the official definition of the word.
My scraps are somewhat intentionally created. When I am squaring up fabrics, i go ahead and cut a larger strip ranging from 1.5″ to 3.5″, just in case. My scraps are bits and pieces from precuts or by combining precuts from different designers.
All of my quilts are a work in progress. I find a color palette that intrigues me and start to accumulate or do what Susan Ache refers to as a fabric pull. Gathering all the fabrics from scrap bins and fabric shelves and then start the process of elimination.
Have you ever walked in to a paint store and grabbed the perfect color on your first try? Not me. It is a decision made by comparison and contrast. Sometimes you have to take home 30 swatches to find the perfect one.. Scraps are a palette of paint swatches. On your fabric pull, 100 fabrics may be pulled to decide on the perfect 40.
In Oh Scrap, I talk about color. I love color. I love reading about it. I love studying the personality of color and its influence in fashion, relationships and even in the classroom. I probably should have named the book, Oh Color. Not so catchy of a title, is it?
What I don’t love about color is all the fancy rules and big words about defining those color rules. That is why I quilt and don’t paint. I could /can paint. I earned an art scholarship that I never ended up using. I grew up around art, working with my hands and obsessed by the angles of architecture. (mother- artist, father-engineer)
Now that I have described my fancy self taught education, I am sure you want to learn color from me, right? What I do hope is that you enjoy the process, explore and experiment with scraps of fabric and learn color along the way is a bonus. Don’t concentrate on perfection but delight in the stories of your work. Somewhere along the way, I forgot to tell my stories and Oh Scrap made me want to share some of my stories with you.
Here are some of my friends that are going to share their stories with you.

I love color and my canvas is patchwork.
I LOVE SCRAPS! How did you know I would love this book? I can’t wait to get a copy and start making things. I use fat quarters the most but also love layer cakes. Well, actually all sizes. Thanks for writing the book!
Congratulations on your book! Its looks wonderful and I can’t wait to get a copy! Favorite precut … hmmmm, I’d have to say fat quarters because of their versatility, but wish I didn’t have to choose because I love them all, its fabric so what’s not to love! Thank you!
I love working with jelly rolls.
Congratulations on your book! I like charm and layer cakes, I find myself making smaller quilts these days. Can’t wait to see your book in person!
I love charm packs and fat quarters. Can’t have enough of them! This is a book I’ll add to my library.
I love your quilts. They are so fresh looking. My favorite precut has to be layer cakes.
I am looking forward to your book for more inspiration in the making of scrappy quilts which are my favorite type of quilt.
Can’t wait to check out this book! Love how you put color together. I’m always intrigued by layer cakes and jelly rolls but honestly fat quarters work most efficiently with the way I quilt. Whatever is leftover just goes into another quilt! Would love to win this book! Audkateaster at gmail dot com.
Your quilts are beautiful… I really like fat quarters, so many possibilities!
Layer cakes —if I can’t justify a whole fat quarter pack!
Fat quarters are my all time favorites! You can never have enough fabric (I tell myself!)! Congrats on the book-it looks wonderful!
My. Momma makes the best scrap quilts where mine are more planned..I must try harder.
Love the book title..it will be my new words.
Morning! I am so excited to see what you have to say about colour and the tips you have for us in regards to that. My favourite precut is the fat quarter and charms are a real close second. Have a great day and thanks for this chance
My favorite pre-cut…hmm…I’d have to say layer cakes at the moment ;o) I am fickle with the pre-cuts ;o)
I have been anxiously awaiting the release of your book…Congratulations!! My favorite precut is still a fat quarter.
Hmmmmm………that is a tough question. I love all of them!! But fat quarters are probably my favorite. I can cut the other precuts from them if needed. Jelly rolls are lots of fun!! And I can’t pass up a good charm pack or two!! Now that layer cake has many possibilities!! I can also cut applique pices from those!! Your book looks wonderful!! Congratulations!! Thank you for sharing your journey.
One pre-cut? That’s crazy talk! Ok, actually I really love those mini charm packs. I know there’s not a ton of fabric there to work with, but I just love those little stacks of squares.
Your new book looks so interesting. Love scrap quilt. My fave precut is a jelly roll.
I like fat quarters best. I have purchased layer cakes, charm packs, mini charm packs and jelly rolls, but don’t find them as versatile. Congratulations on your book! I love scrap quilts and look forward to using your book.
My favorite is the fat quarter as I can use it so many ways and even cut other precut sizes from it. Jelly Rolls might be my second all time fave. Your book looks quite tempting! Congratulations!
It’s really hard to pick just one, I LOVE ALL FABRIC. I do make a lot of baby quilts though and Charm packs are fantastic for that. So I guess Charm packs would be my favorite. I’m thrilled that you’re adding your stories, I’ll definitely enjoy that.
I love FQs or F8ths because they give you a sample of everything in a new line in a very usable size. Thanks for let us play along Lisa.
My favorite precut has to be the mini charm packs. What’s not to love about 2.5″ squares? They are so cute and versatile! And its a great way to get so many different fabrics into one scrap quilt!!
LOVE the idea for your book! Favorite precut?
I love them all but I think I own mostly charm packs.
I love playing with charm packs, but I probably use fat quarters the most because I can cut them up. I love seeing a whole line of fabric in one little package. I can’t wait to check out this book because sewing with scraps is my favorite thing to do!
I love fat quarters!
I usually work with fat quarters but, I have been hoarding a stack of charm packs so, they will become my favorite
I can see that I will need to add your book to my library–I love scrappy quilts! If possible, I like to get at least a fat eighth bundle of a fabric line–fat quarters are even better!
barbara brackman!!!
I would have to say Fat Eights are my favorite. They are large enough so you have lots of options when choosing a pattern. The only problem is, you don’t see a lot of F8th. I will be following your Blog Hop. Congratulations on the new book.
I love all precuts by mods! I normally work with jelly rolls and 5″ charm packs 🙂
Congrats on your new book!
I like working with jelly rolls but still charm packs and layer cakes come in as close seconds.
I love color too. The more, the better. And now, more inspiration for all those scraps of color!
Forgot to say, jelly rolls are my favorite. I can’t believe how much you can do with one.
Hoping my book will be here by Saturday. Looking forward to reading about scrap quilts and your color choices. My precut choice depends on if I have a project in mind or not. If the collection is what I call “a have to have” I’ll buy half yard or fat quarter of whole collection. Right now I’m working on two projects at once. One is fat eights and the newest is a jelly roll. Thinking…. if it’s Moda Fabric I Love It all.
I can never have too many 2 1:2” strips. They are so versatile.
I love the charm squares. It is easier to justify the cost of the small pack when I know I have way more than enough fabric waiting to be used at home. I love that when I do give into temptation that they will at least go together and have enough variety to be fun.
I really can’t pick a favorite precut- it kind of depends on my pick of project at the time. But I do love the precuts in whatever form. Also scrap projects are a favorite of mine. Never want to throw anything away and want to use every bit.
My favorite pre-cuts are fat quarters & I LOVE scrap quilts, the scrappier the better!
I love charm packs. I am a mini quilt enthusiast these days advice run out of room for full size Quilts. The charms work so well for these little charmers!
I seem to use layer cakes the most, but I dream of shelves full of fat quarter bundles — the possibilities!!
I think charm squares are my favorite; they’re ready-made scraps!
My favorite is fat quarters. The variety I can get by collecting fat quarters is amazing. Scrape quilts are my favorite.
I would have to say that fat quarters are my favorites. Seems like I can never pass them up.
I love – love – LOVE the Mode Layer Cakes. They make me want to quilt up a storm. I love the many different fabric choices and the ideas run (no gallup) into my mind. My only problem is that I can’t get enough. Where is the winning lottery ticket when you need it.
Hiya Liisa!
I love layer Cakes as there are so many ways to use them and I don’t have to wrangle large pieces of yardage on my cutting mat!
Thanks 7 Quilty Huggs!
I’m torn between jelly rolls and layer cakes. But all of them are great!
That’s a tough question! I love them all!! A jelly roll can be a JR or about 16 mini charm packs. But they all have a function & save So much Home!!
I’m partial to layer cakes. To me they’re very versatile, cutting in different size blocks etc!
My favorite are fat quarters, they are so versatile and you always have scraps left over after using them!
I love charm squares – it’s such a fun way to accumulate a lot of different fabrics!
Fat quarter towers are my fav. So much to work with. Jelly rolls are next. So much fun to get a bit of every color and design.
