Red and White

What is your favorite color? Mine is red so when I was asked to participate in a collaborative project from Martingale Publishing, I jumped at the chance.

In 2011, I was able to attend the Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts exhibit in New York City. If you are a quilter, you would understand when I say this was a religious experience. 650 red and white quilts from the collection of Joanna S. Rose were exhibited in Park Avenue’s 55,000 sq. ft. Armory’s Wade Thompson Drill Hall. Mrs. Rose celebrated her 80th birthday by creating this exhibit and sharing it with all of us.

Walking up the steps to the Armory everyone was a-buzz with excitement, but as soon as the doors opened, there was silence. Everyone’s breath was taken away with the greatness of the exhibit and the venue. Quilter’s from all over the world attended the exhibit along with historians, educators, children, and artists. To read more about this exhibit, visit Park Avenue Armory.

I left there hoping to make 1 red and white quilt a year. I have made 3 since 2011 so that was another reason I wanted to participate in this book. Now I have 4 red and white quilts along with patterns for several more.

How is that for a virtual quilt show?

Does it make you want to make a red and white quilt?

Or Maybe even just drool over the pages?

Well, guess what, I have some advance copies of Red & White Quilts, 14 Quilts with Timeless Appeal from Today’s Top Designers, and I want to give away a few.

Leave a comment telling me your favorite quilt show you have ever been to. If you haven’t been to a show, let me know which one you want to go to.

DISCLAMIER: I will be attending Quilt Market and Festival so I won’t be able to do the drawing and announce the winner until Saturday, November 10th.

Next week there will be an additional chance to win, follow my Instagram page,  https://www.instagram.com/modalissa/for details.

Books will be available in stores mid November, but if you are attending Quilt Festival, Primitive Gatherings will have some for sale.

My favorite quilt show was the first time I went to the Quilt Festival at the old Shamrock hotel. I was overwhelmed! Houston is still overwhelming, but that first time. . .

I have only been to one quilt show – close to our tiny town here, but I did get to try a long-arm quilting machine there, which was really exciting.
I would LOVE to visit the Quilt Festival in Houston. First I would hug all my favorite designers, which have motivated me along my quilting way these last years, (you included) 🙂 and then soak up all the excitement that goes on in those few short days.

My favorite quilt exhibit was the Year of the Quilt when the American Folk Museum in NYC was still in existence. It ran the gamut of quilting styles, and early to later quilts. It was very inspiring.

My MOST favorite show was an AQS show in Grand Rapids 4 or 5 years ago. They had a special exhibit of Japanese quilts that were over the top. What I most remember is 1 where the blocks were not sewn together but held together with miniature yo-yo’s that were smaller than my pinkie nail. I went back to the exhibit 4-5 times that day. When you are on quilt visual overload, that is quite a #!

I don’t know if it was an actual quilt “show,” but I was able to go to the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY, and it was a magical (and humbling) experience! Although it was 7 or 8 years ago, I still remember walking in and being blown away by the color and intricacy of the quilts. Wonderful!

My favorite quilt show was in La Habra California several years ago. All the quilts on display were hand quilted. They were amazing.

My favorite has to be the big quilt show in Chicago. The first time I went with a college buddy and her aunt and was mesmerized by all the talent I saw. The second time I met a big group of online friends and had a blast!

My favorite quilt show ever was Pine Tree Quilter’s Guild “Quilts Among the Pines” in 2013, Wausau, WI where I won Best of Show with my wool applique quilt Sweet Sixteen, pattern by Edyta Sitar, Laundry Basket Quilts, wool and background fabric by Lisa Bongean, Primitive Gatherings. It was a once -in-a-lifetime thrill! So fun!

  9. Kathy Decker says:

My favorite quilt show is the Quilt Expo in Madison, Wisconsin each year. It’s a nice size show with a big variety of styles on display.

  10. Ranch Wife says:

My favorite quilt show was my first one. It was a local show in Roswell, NM 10 years ago. I wasn’t a quilter yet, but I went with a friend who was (we are both ranch wives), and I wanted to be a quilter. Needless to say, it was a slippery slope and I slid with absolute glee! I like to tease her that she created a monster, but she says she didn’t exactly have to twist my arm. 🙂
And yes, your virtual quilt show makes me want to make a red and white quilt! Headed off to pull from my stash! It didn’t take me long to amass one of those! 🙂

This past summer I attended the Black Creek Pioneer Village quilt show in Toronto. Hundreds of quilts hung outdoors among the historic buildings. A great day with quilty friends in a perfect setting!

My favorite quilt show was many years ago in Moscow, ID. I was new to quilting, trying to learn, and doing the whole process by hand. The show was so inspiring to me; there was a lot of variety in techniques. It opened the quilt world to me.

My favorite quilt show was the AQS Show in Paducah. I started quilting in January of 2000 and went to Paducah in April of that year. I had never been to a quilt show before ~ not even a local one, so the colors and the designs were swimming before my eyes! That first night back at the hotel, I could not get to sleep because of the many colors I kept seeing even with my eyes closed. Finally, in desperation, I said to myself, “Think muslin!” And then I dozed off.

I have gone to a small local quilt show in Bordman, Idaho. While not as impressive as something like Road to Calif, or some of the other bigger shows, I liked it because you really had a chance to enjoy what the local women and children were doing. They pulled together a very nice event, along with a sweet homemade luncheon and wonderful pies.

After quilting for 30 years I finally just made a red and white quilt at our clubs retreat. Now I want to make all of them in the book!

  17. Toni Anne Potter says:

Yes, that was a fantastic virtual quilt show! Thank you, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It will definitely be the highlight of this dreary Saturday here on Long Island NY. I ‘ve been to two AQS that were a train or bus ride away that I really had a wonderful time at. If I were dreaming about going to quilt show I’d pick Houston or Paducah. I can dream!

The Gilbert Historical Museum hosts a themed quilt show each spring. Not only do you get to see some beautiful award-winning quilts, but there are also submissions from local quilters and their children. It’s a wonderful way to see what other quilters are doing.

I was able to attend Quilt Festival in Houston about 7 years ago. It was so inspiring!! Wish I could have seen the Red and White exhibit in New York. I’ve been working on my own red and white sampler. How small are those hst in Lisa Bongean’s quilt? OMG!!!

  20. Karen Seitz says:

I haven’t been to many shows, but I really enjoyed my local guild’s show earlier thihs year where I exhibited some of my quilts for the first time. It was great to see them upright where I could really look at them, and it was fun to hear visitor’s comments, both good and not-so-good.

  21. Katherine says:

was able to attend of of the first Quilt Odyssey Shows; at that point it was in Gettysburg Pa and it was incredible!Spent the better part of a day there and left exhausted but also energized!

  22. Jay says:

My favorite quilt show was one organized by Sheryl Johnson at her shop, Temecula Quilt Co. in Temecula, CA. She asked customers to contribute red and white quilts to display in the shop. This was after the Infinite Variety exhibit, and was inspired that wonderful display. It was fun to participate, but even more fun to see what everyone shared. There were big quilts, throws, table-toppers and many tiny quilts. It was a feast for the eyes and a huge success.

  23. Janet D says:

My favorite show is put on annually by the Palouse Patchers in eastern Washington. I go every year, it’s not so large that it’s tiring and I leave wanting to go home and sew!

  24. Karen A says:

In 2017 I was able to attend both Quilt Con and the AQS Lancaster show. Two great shows and two very different experiences. And I loved them both.

  25. Sue H says:

My favorite quilt show is my guild’s biannual quilt show called Quilts From The Heart. We have so many talented quilters in our group from the Metro St. Louis area and it is such a pleasure to see what we’ve all been working on over the past two years.

  26. Carla says:

I’ve been to our local quilt show several times and even got to go to Quilt Festival in Houston once. I am really looking forward to the red & white challenge quilt show the Quilted Moose is hosting the end of November in connection with Debbie’s quilt in this book.

  27. Karen says:

I have not attended many quilt shows, but always enjoy the local quilt show. I would love to attend Quilt Festival, especially this year with the beautiful red and white quilts!! =:)

I have never been to a quilt show and the one that I would like to attend would be any one! I love fabrics and quilts and can never see too many! I love this book (congratulations on your beautiful quilt) and would love to win a copy. Thanks for the chance!

  30. I love seeing all the beautiful Red and White quilts. I do have one in the planning stages….I just need to find a few more good red fabrics to go with what I’ve acquired so far. I’d love to go the the Houston show one day soon. Have fun there.

  31. Renee Arnett says:

I’ve always wanted to make a red and white quilt and now I’m really inspired! The Spring AQS Quilt Show in Paducah is my favorite. The quilt show is always wonderful plus springtime in Paducah is so pretty and I love how the entire town is so hospitable to quilters too!

  32. Anna Takeda says:

Definitely the Infinite Variety show. One of my favorite color combinations along with blue and white and the way the quilts were hung was very creative. It was a jaw-dropping experience.

  33. Jenny M says:

I have only been to one quilt show in a little town near me. I left wanting to make several quilts. I can’t imagine all the inspiration from a major quilt show.
