My Quilt Updates

The quilt for my new little niece is finished and in the mail. I changed some of my plans on the border. I was inspired by Camille’s quilts with ric rac. I called my friend Gina Halladay and frantically ordered enough ric rac to sew around the border. Love it! I was going to sew it down but someone suggested that a baby would love touching the loose edges. Good idea, stiffy! I chickened out of appliqueing Savannah Lynne Tardy along the border so I had her name quilted along the border.(thanks, Maggi Honeyman) Also there are 2 Aunt Lisa’s in this family, so I am Aunt Izzy. Maggie also quilted “made by Aunt Izzy” in the corner. I can’t let the other aunt Lisa get credit for the quilt. Can I? Emily quilt is in the mail, give Savannah a big hug for me. Bear with me while I talk about myself a little more!

Yes, I was a cover girl on the April issue of McCalls Quilting. (no honey, not the cover of the sports illustrated swimsuit issue!) I just found out that this quilt will also be hanging in Paducah, KY. Wowser! Well, it will be hanging in Hancock’s of Paducah’s store, not in the actual show. I think I could still be able to say I had a quilt at Paducah, right?!

One thing you will not see in the magazine is the back of any of my quilts. Each year I choose a theme for my quilt backs. 2 years ago everything I made had plaids or wovens on the back. Last year was the year of the dots, the bigger the better for my quilt backs. This year is pieced backs. This is my attempt to use my stash, you know make room for new stash while helping the environment and the pocketbook. (or at least that what I tell my husband)

I took a quick picture of the back before I had to SHIP MY QUILT TO PADUCAH.

How time flies? My first post as modalissa was right before I headed of to Quilt Market. At the time, I gave you a preview on my Honeybun TM log cabin quilt. At least twice a year I make a quilt using as many different moda fabric collections as I can. I know this is psycho, but it makes me happy sewing and thinking about each of the designers.

This week I received my copy of McCalls Quilting- June 2009. There on page 40 (same as my age 🙂 is my log cabin quilt. I forgot how much I love this quilt. It is so easy but the way the blocks are sewn makes it look as if there are staggered seams. Basically half the blocks start with a dark center and half start with a light center. Maggi quilted it and really made the quilt sing! This quilt is scrappy and so to get your started on your very own, I am going to give away my extra strips from this project. There I go again, helping the environment and your pocketbook. All you have to do is guess how many pieces are in the quilt.

A couple of clues:

Not how many different fabrics, how many pieces. Simple multiplication- pieces in a block X how many blocks plus corner strips.

Tricky part- I have pieced the back, so this is where you just have to blindly guess. Sorry had to make it interesting.

Okay I admit it, they use a picture of me from when I was 40. Thank you, Beth!

I will draw a winner on April 19th. That way if you go to the show you can see the quilt in person. The AQS show in Paducah is April 21- 26.

I thought I would add a picture of the Prize. I will even throw in the blocks in all stages and the wonderful storage box holding the strips.

I love the baby quilt…what a lucky baby…and the quilting is absolutely beautiful! I’ve noticed your quilts…I always look to see who the designers are..and I love both of them. So, now for my guess…I’ll say 1205…thinking that the back is scrappy…but not as scrappy as the front!

  6. Hello again Lisa! As always, it is great to hear from you!

1st- Your niece is going to cherish the quilt that you made for her! The colors give it a modern touch!

2nd- Congrat on your cover! I never knew a Covergirl….next you will be a Supermodel!

3rd-I guess that we will all have to take a trip to Hancock’s in order to experience your beautiful quilt! BTW-I am also into piecing the back of my quilts. I mean, we paid good $ for the leftover fabric! And who wouldn’t want to show off all of their MODA fabric!

    Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Lissa,
wow, the quilt for your niece is stunningly beautiful ~ she’ll surely love it now and when she’s grown up. Such a special gift!
Congrats on being featured in a great magazine {I got a copy of the April issue some weeks ago and I was really excited to recognize you ~ told my boyfriend: hey, I know her through blogging ;o)}.
As for the number of pieces in your beautiful quilt…hmm…I’d say 1,222.
    Cheers, Julia

    Fabulous quilts, Lissa.
I received my April issue last week — what fun to see published works of such talented people I’ve discovered in the bloggy world!
    My guess is 1027.

Woo hoo. That’s a lot of strips. I notice the photo shows more blocks than is listed on the pattern??? Hmm, I will guess 485 including the strips for the back. Seems low compared to some, but I’m sticking with 485.

  13. Kim says:

Love the ric-rac! I need to try that!!! I will make a very un-educated guess and guess 1286. I have no idea if that is high or low. But I would LOVE to win!!! Thanks!

  14. Priscilla says:

I’m going to guess 1040 pieces all up…lol, what a fun competition.
I love that quilt you made for your niece, the colours the design – especially the rickrak – lets just say I love everything about it, what a blessed little niece to get that from her Aunt Izzy :o)

I’ve had this quilt marked as one of my ‘Must Do’s’ since I got my magazine…it is beautiful. Well, since we are flying blind on the back I’m going to guess 1098…Y??? Because we like you…lol…but I’m not sure I’m counting enough for the back. Ah well, sounds good and considering your other pieced back, I’m thinking you just love working with the fabrics and piece count doesn’t intimidate you. Other than cutting out my pieces (when I’m not using Moda’s wonderful new pre-cuts which I adore and am rapidly running out of) I don’t worry at all about piece count, I just love the sewing…completely theraputic and I love to get lost in it. Okay, enough of that, yup, 1098, that’s my guess, though I think I’m probably a bit short. Beautiful quilt. I’m hoping to do mine with Hartfield Honey Buns (hoping is the key word here, if I can get enough) That one is Camille’s fault, I won one of her give aways and the Hartfield Honey Bun and adorable patterns were my prize…I adore anything purple, and elegant to boot. Good luck to everyone and thanks for a fun, mind bending give away. Nancy aka teenietaters@msn.com

    A couple things:

    1. I am so in love with that baby quilt. I need a stack of solids and some templates pronto so I can copy you exactly. LOVE.

    2. So many beautiful quilts… now, when do you have time to sew?

    3. I’m going to play it “Price is Right style”. 1 piece. Then if everyone else overbids, I win right? 😉

    As always, you rock!

  17. Oops! My comment went away when I tried to post. Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS! I recently recently read your entire blog and fell in love with the log cabin quilt. Now I can have the pattern for it. My brain is too tired to multiply, but I’ll be really excited for the winner of your leftover strips. And CUTE, CUTE baby quilt!
