Splendid Sampler II

Welcome to the last stop on the Splendid Sampler 2 block hop.

I have a story about my quilt block, but first I wanted to tell you about a few behind the scenes details. (excuse my analogies, but it fits)

While I did not birth this Splendid Sampler baby, I was indeed there at conception. A few years ago, I sat with the uber-talented Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson as they talked through this little idea they had. I immediately asked how Moda Fabrics can be involved. We continued to talk through the process from beginning to end, organizing the fabrics, creating Facebook pages, building a website, featuring patterns and inviting creatives to be a part of the journey. We all hit the ground running. Over the next fun months the baby grew and grew, we had our version of morning sickness as we orchestrated picking two color palettes,  dividing the fabrics into sets, shipping them across the world. Whew! Pat and Jane were contacting designers that could tell a story and teach a different technique all in a 6″ block. The baby was birthed, and it grew, bigger than anyone would have expected. It became so much and eventually turned into a book.

Pretty Awesome!
They survived the stretch marks, morning sickness, and delivery.

Well, Jane and Pat decided that they could do this again!!

June 13, 2017, I received the second invite to be a part of another birth…….

Below are swatches of the color palette for Splendid Sampler 2.

Fabrics were cut, folded and mailed.

My block’s name is Big Sun.

I made this block during the Hurricane Harvey.

We were asked to tell our story about Best Quilting Life as we were making our blocks and this is why I named this block,

Big Sun even though it is a little 6″ block.

I couldn’t help but think about how so many people were affected by this storm,
that I wish a Big Sun would come and dry up all the water.

I have been so fortunate to start quilting at a very young age, to have met many people through the process

and eventually found a job in the industry doing what I love.

My quilt block instructions can be found on the Splendid Sampler website, click here for more info.

Splendid Sampler- Big Sun

What I know is quilter’s use their gift of quilting to help others, whether it is making a

quilt for a new baby or comforting those experiencing national disasters.

The life of a quilt lives on long after we are gone, it is a part of the maker, it is part of their story.

Who knows what is in store for Pat and Jane on their journey, but I always hope to be a part of their story and

thank them for including me in the birth of the Splendid Samplers!

Now if you have read all the way to here,

Your block is so cute. Thank you for the giveaway.
I really like the 6 inch blocks. Right now I have two sampler quilts in the works, all made from 6 inch blocks. I think they are really adorable.

  2. Gail says:

I love working with small blocks. Mini blocks are a favorite up to 6 or 7 inch blocks. I made one sampler quilt with 12 and 15 inch blocks, but I still like little blocks best.

  3. Brenda Holcman Johnsen says:

I would prefer a square block under 10 inches. We live in our Motorhome full time and I need to contain all projects in scrapbook type plastic containers as we travel. A group of 10 inch or smaller blocks fits nicely.

  4. Susan Riley says:

I did the Tula Pink’s 100 Modern Blocks so got used to creating in the 6 1/2″ block format. . When completed, there is so much to look at repeatedly! I LOVE how your brain designs=you are on my Nook, in magazine rip-outs etc.

  5. Denise Conoan says:

I love the 6″ blocks. You can play with a variety of settings. This size is easy to work with and there are seemingly limitless block designs.

  6. Beth Esser says:

My favorite size quilt block is the one I’m working on at the moment!: but those little 6 1/2 inch blocks sure do make a “splendid sampler”!

  7. Linda in PA says:

I generally like working with 12” blocks, but have enjoyed the 6” Splendid Sampler blocks. Your block is great! We can all benefit from some sun in our lives!

  8. Martha says:

I most like 18″ pieced blocks with multiple pieces (esoecially curved designs similar to your “Big Sun” and Rebecca’s “Milk and Cookies” beside yours on the book cover).

  9. Audrey says:

Whatever size I am working on now is my favorite as long as they all come together in the quilt/wall hanging/table runner, etc.

  10. Toni kenyon says:

I love the 6″ blocks of SS. My mum is doing Dear Jane but thats to fiddly for me. i am appliquing some bits on for her 😀

  11. Nancy Wiehl says:

I love the 5 inch block. One of my favorite quilts I made was 1 inch squares sewn together to make a 5 inch block. I love charms and the many things that can be done with them. Also scraps can be made into 5 inch blocks or smaller pieces made into 5 inch blocks and give that great scrappy look.

  12. Vickie S says:

I enjoy working on blocks that are 10 to 12 inches. I’m currently stitching block “Cat Nap” Splendid Sampler 2 by Nicole Vos van Avezathe. It is enjoyable to personalize it with my fabrics and additional creative juices!

  13. Ronda says:

I don’t have a “favorite” size block ~ I love them all equally in all of their uniqueness ~ just like my children. Each one is special on it’s own.

  14. Michelle Horgan says:

I usually sew 12 inch blocks, but my machine is on the fritz so I’m hand stitching 6 inch blocks and really loving the process. I have never made a sampler quilt, but sitting and hand stitching would be perfect for such a quilt!

  15. Stephanie Woodward says:

I like 12 inch blocks when making a large quilt. I have made some 4 inch block and I like them, but they are difficult to quilt.

  16. Carole S. says:

I love the 6-inch block the best, but adore large blocks. One of my favorites, yet to be quilted, is a top I made by using Block 5 from Moda’s Go Big for your home! book, but I made it with a 3 Sisters layer cake instead of a charm pack. A 72-inch block is perfect!

  17. Debbie says:

I prefer 12inch blocks but have enjoyed doing the 6inchers,smaller than that I go batty. Like your block we could use more sunshine !

  18. Ann D says:

I guess my preference is for 12″ blocks. They are usually quick to make and it doesn’t take many to make a quilt block. Thanks for the chance to win.

  19. Debbie Horton says:

My “comfort size” block is 10.5″, easy to work with. This is the first time I’ve made this many 6.5″ inch blocks and I’m enjoying the challenge of trying to keep everything inside that box!

  20. Jamie Cargo says:

The Splendid Sampler 1 was the first quilt along I’ve done. I think that influenced my love of 6-inch blocks. I’ll make blocks of other sizes but they always feel ginormous or off in some way.

  21. Nancy T says:

Picking a favorite block size is akin to picking your favorite child! My favs seem to be the odd ones out there. Just finished Buzz Saw, which is 8×8. Also assembling Oda May’s School of Sewing which has a variety of sized blocks. Putting binding on Daniella Stout’s Bel Canto which blocks are 10″ finished. I love them all!

  22. Lynne Thiessen says:

I loved making my Spendid Sampler and I am looking forward to Splendid Sampler 2. I have not started yet as I have so many other things in the go. I have been a quilter and sewer all my life. My sewing studio is my go to place whenever I need a rest and time to think. I lose myself in sewing. Thanks. Lynne

  23. Debra says:

I like 12 in blocks… they are so flexible to use with 2, 3, 4 and 6 in blocks to create interesting designs…….. fingers crossed I win the book and some fabrics……. would love to start my own splendid sampler….. with some help from Modalissa.
