Welcome to the last stop on the Splendid Sampler 2 block hop.
I have a story about my quilt block, but first I wanted to tell you about a few behind the scenes details. (excuse my analogies, but it fits)
While I did not birth this Splendid Sampler baby, I was indeed there at conception. A few years ago, I sat with the uber-talented Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson as they talked through this little idea they had. I immediately asked how Moda Fabrics can be involved. We continued to talk through the process from beginning to end, organizing the fabrics, creating Facebook pages, building a website, featuring patterns and inviting creatives to be a part of the journey. We all hit the ground running. Over the next fun months the baby grew and grew, we had our version of morning sickness as we orchestrated picking two color palettes, dividing the fabrics into sets, shipping them across the world. Whew! Pat and Jane were contacting designers that could tell a story and teach a different technique all in a 6″ block. The baby was birthed, and it grew, bigger than anyone would have expected. It became so much and eventually turned into a book.
Pretty Awesome!
They survived the stretch marks, morning sickness, and delivery.
Well, Jane and Pat decided that they could do this again!!
June 13, 2017, I received the second invite to be a part of another birth…….
Below are swatches of the color palette for Splendid Sampler 2.
Fabrics were cut, folded and mailed.
My block’s name is Big Sun.
I made this block during the Hurricane Harvey.
We were asked to tell our story about Best Quilting Life as we were making our blocks and this is why I named this block,
Big Sun even though it is a little 6″ block.
I couldn’t help but think about how so many people were affected by this storm,
that I wish a Big Sun would come and dry up all the water.
I have been so fortunate to start quilting at a very young age, to have met many people through the process
and eventually found a job in the industry doing what I love.
My quilt block instructions can be found on the Splendid Sampler website, click here for more info.
What I know is quilter’s use their gift of quilting to help others, whether it is making a
quilt for a new baby or comforting those experiencing national disasters.
The life of a quilt lives on long after we are gone, it is a part of the maker, it is part of their story.
Who knows what is in store for Pat and Jane on their journey, but I always hope to be a part of their story and
thank them for including me in the birth of the Splendid Samplers!
Now if you have read all the way to here,
you know I have something good in store for you!

My favorite size is 12″.
I like smaller blocks – between 4 and 6 inches. Probably why I have sooo many WIPs!!
I love a big fat 12” block!
I love 6 inch blocks!! I’m working to fully excel at 6 inch blocks since I’m a fairly new quilter. I love the SS blocks!
I generally go with the 12.5” block, however, I’ve been enjoying the 6.5” blocks and the variety it provides. I love samplers and some of them have varied size blocks which I really enjoy. All this kinda makes a repetitious 12.5”. I’ll do any of them though – as long as I’m quilting! Thank you for sharing your story for the sun block. All the best, Kris
Love the 5″ blocks, with the 12″ a close second! Love Your block! Thanks for a neat Giveaway!
My favorite quilt block size is at least 16″ but my favorite medium to work in is applique! Thanks for a chance to win!
I like 12” blocks because the quilts go together quickly and I can also combine them with 4” or 6” blocks. The Splendid Samplers have been a lot of fun to follow. Thank you.
12 inch blocks
I’m loving the 6″ blocks in The Splendid Sampler 2, so they are my current ‘favorite’.
Before the Splendid Sampler I was leery of 6” blocks, they seemed so small so I gravitated to 12 in blocks. Now I enjoy the challenge of making them.
I really like 12 inch finished blocks but also love the 6 inch finished blocks.
Hi Lissa. I love your quilts. Love all size blocks but I really like six and one half blocks because they are so cute and have small little details that give it character. Thank you for your beautiful patterns and inspiration.
My favorite size block depends on the project. But the quilts I’ve made with a variety of block sizes seem to have more interest in them. If I’m chosen, I hope it’s the 2nd Sampler Book as I haven’t bought it as of yet. Thanks
My favorite size block depends on the project. I admire the tiny block quilts but the ones I’ve made with a variety of block sizes seem more interesting to me.
I love the 6” block it is the one I am doing at the moment nearly finished splendid sampler one and I am doing some of the splendid Sampler two I have not got the splendid sampler Two book yet as I live in the uk I am look for someone here thanks for giving me a chance to win.
I have finished the Splendid Sampler 1 blocks, so I would love, love, love to win the fabric and book 2! I really enjoy the 6” blocks, lovely size to make and to work with.
I have enjoyed the 6 inch blocks because they use my scraps. Sometimes I want something bigger and those are fun too. I’m also sewing on Moda Blockheads 2 and I like the variety. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
I am enjoying the 6inch blocks as they challenge my newly found skills in patchwork. I am creating this sampler for my first granddaughter and enjoying learning new techniques.
Thank you for chance to enter your giveaway. Love your block. Thank you for the pattern for it. My favorite size block is 12 inches… Love your nick name Moda lisa….too cute
No favorite size, I love them all.
My favorite quilt block is 12 inch but I am also enjoying 8 inch as my second choice.
I recently started making a quilt with 8 inch. Thank you!
I’ll try any size block from 6″ to 15″. The fun with Splendid Sampler 1 was the opportunity to try different types of block designs. I discovered so many designers that I wouldn’t have otherwise. Thanks for being part of that journey.
I seam to use a lot of 6″ blocks. Although I like 12″ for something fast. Hope to win!
I love 6″ blocks! Thanks for your inspiration for all us quilters.
I generally like 12″ block, but I am enjoying the 6″ splendid sampler blocks
My fav block is around a 12″ . I also like 6″ block too. Thanks
I like to make 12 inch block the most. Love your block!
I love the little 6″ blocks. Even with all the HSTs and losing my points, I love the way the little blocks look together.
So, having only ever made 1 quilt in my life so far-and that a king size with 6 in log cabin blocks-I can honestly say my favorite size block is something bigger than 6 inches! LOL! I hope this counts for consideration in the drawing!
I have worked on all size blocks, enjoying them all, but as I get older and have grandchildren and great grandchildren I try to use 8”, 10” and 12” blocks, thinking the quilt will grow more quickly and I’ll get them finished more quickly!
I have several favorites, 4″, 6″, 8″, 10″ or 12″, they all play so nicely together!
Hi Liisa! I’ve been watching all of the things you do, inside quilting/sewing! I have been making the blocks from the SS 1 book, now, I need to get started on SS 2 blocks, before it gets more blocks!
Thanks for adding your Big Sun block, I should start on the SS2 blocks, now!! And really enjoys making it!
never thought about which block size might be my favorite, but I’ll go with 12″ and sometimes 6″ and lately I have liked 10″ so there ya go!
I like the 8″ or 10″ blocks the most. Not too tiny not too big. I have enjoyed the Splendid Samplers 6″ blocks as well for a quick go-together block. I do love your block! Indeed full of Sunshine!
The larger the better!
I’ve enjoyed the variety and fun in the different blocks. I think my preferences run from 6″ and larger, though I do enjoy the challenge of smaller blocks that I am doing in a different BOM.
Your sunshine block would make any quilt happy! I like all block sizes but the larger ones are easier for me to work with. Sometimes my fingers are to stiff to fiddle with teeny tiny pieces.
Since piecing isn’t my favorite, and I make a lot of charity quilts I use 12 inch blocks the most. thanks for the block & giveaway!
I am enjoying the 6″ blocks. They are all so cute especially you Big Sun block.. But it really doesn’t matter to me what size the block is, if I like the pattern of the quilt I am working on. It’s the process of creating that I love.
For Lap size quilt my favorite size is 6.5 but I also love to do small or mini quilts so I also like 3.5 inch squares.
12″ seems like a good size, but I enjoy doing just about any size.
I usually make 12″ blocks, but making the 6″ blocks has taught me a lot.
I like the 12 inch block. Quicker to put quilt together
I generally like 12 inch blocks, but like them in combination with 6 inch blocks also.
If I am going to dig into my stash and sew some blocks, I pick 12.5″ (unfinished). I did just complete a project with 6.5″ blocks which was strangely exciting and interesting. I thought the small blocks with small pieces would make me crazy, but as I persisted, there was an interesting rythym. With this in mind, I look forward to setting aside time to make the splendid blocks, choosing those that appeal to me or for a technique that I’ve never tried. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
My favorite would be a block big enough to cut up and sew back together to see what you come up with.
I like a bit larger block like 12 inch.
I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the 6” blocks. I did the Splendid Sampler 1 blocks and am now doing Splendid Sampler 2. It’s such fun. My color scheme for 2 is black background with brights. So far it has worked out. Who has more fun than quilters?
I really don’t have a favourite, but I must say I do enjoy these 6 1/2″ blocks! There is sew much you can create in that space, love it.
