Moda Blockheads 6: Cloud Nine by Debbie Maddy

Block 16 of Moda Blockheads 6 is here, and this one feels like a breath of fresh air. Say hello to Cloud Nine, designed by the ever-inspiring Debbie Maddy of Tiori Designs. Great story about where Debbie came up with name Tiori name- down below and sign up for her newsletter, here.

Known for her soothing indigo palettes, shibori textures, and slow-stitching philosophy, Debbie brings a sense of peace and presence to her work—and this block is no exception.

Blocksheads 6- Debbie Maddy

Cloud Nine – Light as Air

The Cloud Nine block combines classic flying geese units with a central four-patch, resulting in a design that feels like it’s gently floating across the surface of your quilt. The layered structure gives it just enough depth, while the soft directional movement evokes a dreamy, carefree feeling—like drifting on a cloud on a quiet day.

It’s structured but never rigid. Elegant but still playful. For my version, I featured the main colors of my quilt, reds and blues and added pinks and light blues as the backgrounds. But I can imagine this block looking just as lovely in Bella Solids, moody grays, or bold colors—it adapts beautifully to your palette and mood.

Meet Debbie Maddy – Indigo Dreamer & Textile Storyteller

Debbie Maddy is a fabric designer for Moda Fabrics, and the founder of Tiori Designs, known for her work in Japanese resist dyeing (shibori), natural indigo dyeing, and the slow-stitch movement. Her collections are often inspired by her travels and her deep love for ancient traditions and textiles. I was fortunate to visit Debbie’s studio for a class in Shibori dyeing.

Debbie’s quilting philosophy encourages creativity without stress—she invites quilters to embrace the process, breathe deeply, and connect with their materials. Her teaching style is encouraging and mindful, and her designs radiate simplicity, balance, and quiet beauty and she is the sweetest gal!

Week 14 of Moda Blockheads 6 has arrived, and this one comes with a swirl of charm and motion—say hello to Carousel Waltz,  by the effortlessly chic Camille Roskelley of Thimble Blossoms.

Elegant and playful all at once, Carousel Waltz feels like it could twirl right off your design wall. If you’ve been looking for a block with movement and grace, this one’s for you.

Blockheads 6- Camille Roskelley

Carousel Waltz – Spinning in Style

The Carousel Waltz block features half-square triangles and a central pinwheel, coming together in a design that has both rhythm and poise. The rotating shape  (center pinwheel) creates a subtle spiral, like the graceful motion of a carousel in mid-waltz—steady, gentle, and beautifully balanced.

This block is one of those satisfying builds that starts simple and ends in something quite magical, super quick and so many options to play with color. Whether you lean into a two-tone palette or go scrappy for a bit of sparkle, Carousel Waltz offers a beautiful opportunity to showcase soft contrast and symmetry.

I loved working on this one—it fits so well with my vintage-faded theme and brings a little extra joy to the center of the block.

Moda Blockheads 6: Block 13 – Toadstool Twist by Betsy Chutchian

This week’s Moda Blockheads 6 block comes with a sprinkle of magic and a twist of tradition—introducing Toadstool Twist by the always-inspiring Betsy Chutchian.

Known for her deep love of quilting history and rich reproduction fabrics, Betsy brings a sense of storytelling to every design. And Toadstool Twist? It feels like a little adventure stitched into fabric—a block full of movement, mystery, and just the right touch of whimsy.

Blockheads 6- Block 13

Toadstool Twist – A Walk Through the Woods

The Toadstool Twist block combines flying geese units with diagonal piecing to create a dynamic, layered composition. The clean intersections and rhythmic lines suggest the winding turns of a woodland path—one you might find in the middle of a fairy-tale forest.

This block is all about balance and play. There’s enough structure to give it a solid framework, but just enough irregular movement to keep your eye bouncing around. It’s lively without being busy—exactly what you want in a sampler quilt.

For my version, I leaned into primary colors with the Magic Dot Basic by Lella Boutique. I am a huge fan of anything dot and these dots are magical. They come in a huge variety of colors, so ask for them at your favorite store. You will want to stock up!

Meet Betsy Chutchian – Keeper of Quilting Stories

Betsy Chutchian is a master of blending the past with the present. She designs lush reproduction-style fabric collections for Moda Fabrics, writes quilt books inspired by antique blocks and Civil War-era quilts, and shares her love of all things historical through lectures, trunk shows, and patterns.

Her work always has that heirloom feel—blocks and quilts that look like they’ve been passed down through generations, even when they’re brand new. Betsy brings an authenticity and reverence to her craft that makes each design feel like part of a bigger story.

Moda Blockheads 6: Block 10 – Janet Clare

Moda Blockheads 6: Block 10 – What a Lark by Janet Clare

This week’s Moda Blockheads 6 block comes with a touch of British elegance, a bit of sketchbook whimsy, and a quiet sense of direction. Introducing What a Lark, created by none other than the talented Janet Clare.

Whether she’s drawing in ink, stitching by hand, or creating dreamy fabric collections inspired by weathered coastlines and English skies, Janet always brings something poetic to the quilting table—and this block is no exception.

What a Lark – A Quiet Guide

The What a Lark block is composed of simple triangle units and a strong center square, forming a design that radiates calm strength. Like its namesake, this block feels grounded, guiding, and balanced—a fixed point among the ever-shifting layout of your sampler.

There’s a certain symmetry to this one that invites peaceful piecing. I stuck with a soft palette—navy, cream, and subtle texture—to reflect the windswept coastlines that inspire so much of Janet’s work. But this block would be stunning in bold monochrome or even scrappy neutrals.

It’s a reminder that not every block needs to shout. Sometimes a quiet, thoughtful design anchors the whole quilt.

Meet Janet Clare – Artist, Author, & English Creative

Janet Clare is a designer for Moda Fabrics, illustrator, pattern designer, and author based in the UK. Her work combines hand-drawn artwork, muted color palettes, and storytelling—often inspired by nature, family, and the sea.

Janet’s quilts are known for their soft minimalism, stitched textures, and whimsical touches that make you look twice. She often incorporates free-motion quiltingappliqué, and a personal narrative into everything she creates—making each project feel like a page from her sketchbook.

Follow Janet Clare for quiet inspiration and glimpses into her beautifully creative world:

Expect coastal sketches, soothing stitching videos, and lots of timeless design inspiration with a hint of British charm.

Navigate Over to Moda

You can find the North Star block pattern and step-by-step video tutorial now on the Moda Blog. Janet’s version (stitched in her signature navy-and-cream color story) is as graceful and understated as you’d expect—truly a guiding light in the middle of the Blockheads journey.

A Stitch in the Right Direction

Have you made your  block yet? It’s a lovely moment to slow down and stitch something serene. Whether you follow Janet’s lead with calm neutrals or let it shine in your favorite color, this block is sure to become a quiet favorite.

Share your block using #ModaBlockheads and #ModaBlockheads6, and tag @modafabrics and @janetclareuk—we’d love to see how you interpret this beautifully balanced design.

Blockheads 6- block 9- Me and My Sister

Say hello to Block 9 of Moda Blockheads 6, and it’s bursting with fun, flair, and Barbara Groves’ signature charm. From one half of the hilarious and high-energy duo Me & My Sister Designs, this block is pure joy in fabric form.

Bold reds and playful pinks come together to form a sparkling starburst—Polaris, because that’s exactly what it does. This block took a bit of practice and choosing geometric fabrics was probably not the best option, but that is why this is a skill builder project.

Polaris – Playful Geometry with Heart

This block combines diamond-in-a-square piecing, and peaky and spike shapes to create a star shape with tons of personality. It’s a design that feels both classic and unexpected—like it showed up to the quilt party in red lipstick and polka dots.

I used three shades of red and pink, keeping the contrast crisp and the vibe vintage-sweet. The center square is my favorite—it’s like a little framed message wrapped in joy. And the background print? A perfect reminder that basics don’t have to be boring. Grid + color = instant energy.

Meet Barbara Groves – Color Queen & Quilt Comedian

Barbara Groves is one half of the sister-powered duo Me & My Sister Designs, the Moda designers known for their bright color palettes, bubbly prints, and infectious quilting spirit. Their patterns are cheerful, beginner-friendly, and always bring the fun. And Barbara is a hoot! If you ever get a chance to take a class with her you won’t be sorry!

Barbara’s blocks are often about joy, movement, and giving tradition a modern twist—exactly what Blockheads needs right in the middle of the journey.

Moda Blockheads 6: Block 8 – Sandcastle by Sherri McConnell

We’ve made it to Block 8 in the Moda Blockheads 6 series, and this week’s design feels like summer in stitch form—introducing the Sandcastle Block by none other than Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life.

Much like the sandcastles we all tried to build as kids—some sturdy, some swept away by waves—this block combines structure and softness in such a beautiful way. Sherri’s design is graceful, tidy, and just playful enough to make it a joy to piece.

Sandcastle – Soft Curves, Crisp Corners

The Sandcastle block features a smart combo of quarter-square triangles and flip corner units, creating a balanced and flowing layout that nods to the rounded edges and tidy lines of a perfectly built sandcastle. There’s a gentle rhythm to the block—curves suggested through angles, and dimension created through layering. If I were to change anything on my fabric choices for this block, I would have picked a darker fabric to replace the pink small gingham. There is not enough contrast to create the “roundness” that the small triangles would create for this block. But I still love it. Lesson learned!

It’s a versatile block that plays well with both soft, sandy neutrals and bright, beachy tones. I chose a muted, light palette to keep within my faded vintage theme, but I can already imagine making a few extras in bolder tones for future layout options. (Yes, I’m still undecided on my final layout—and loving the freedom of that!)

Meet Sherri McConnell – Classic, Clean, and Always Inspiring

Sherri McConnell is one of those designers who brings both calm and clarity to everything she touches. She’s a pattern designer, fabric designer for Moda Fabrics (alongside her daughter, Chelsi Stratton), podcaster, educator, and prolific blogger behind A Quilting Life.

Sherri’s patterns are known for their clean construction, approachable layouts, and timeless style. She’s also a gifted teacher—if you’re someone who loves structure, tips, and practical quilting wisdom, she’s absolutely one to follow.

Moda Blockheads 6: Block 7 – Bellissimo by Joanna Figueroa

This week’s Moda Blockheads 6 block arrives with all the grace and refinement we’ve come to expect from Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree & Co. Say hello to Bellissimo—an 18″ beauty that lives up to its name in every stitch.

“Bellissimo” means beautiful in Italian, and that’s exactly what this block is—elegant, crisp, and so satisfying to piece. Whether you’re going bold and bright or soft and subtle, this star will shine.

Bellissimo – A Star with European Flair

The Bellissimo Star Block combines half-square trianglesflying geese, and quarter-square triangles in a layered, radiant design. The structured geometry creates beautiful intersections and visual depth, with that classic starburst shape at the heart of it all.

There’s a balance of strength and softness here—something Joanna does so well in her quilt patterns. The block feels tailored and clean, but never harsh. It’s graceful and inviting—exactly the kind of design that anchors a sampler quilt or stands out as a focal point.

One of my tips is that a piece several sets of half square triangle papers in a big size. That way I have lots of sets and colors already made and I can trim down to what size I need for a particular block. It is not like I won’t use any extras on a future project!!

I loved working on this one. Because it finishes at 18″, you get the satisfaction of a larger block that comes together piece by piece, allowing for a little more play with color and contrast. I stayed with my vintage-faded theme but added in a few slightly darker tones to give the center star some dimension and added the stripe for fun. Bellissimo, indeed!

Meet Joanna Figueroa – Classic Elegance in Every Stitch

Joanna Figueroa is the heart and hands behind Fig Tree & Co., a brand beloved by quilters for its timeless patterns, romantic palettes, and soft vintage feel. Joanna designs bestselling fabric collections for Moda Fabrics, filled with florals, fresh fruit motifs, and gentle color stories rooted in her European heritage.

Her quilts are known for clean construction, approachable elegance, and a look that blends farmhouse comfort with a bit of European charm. Joanna’s also a prolific teacher, writer, and pattern designer who brings warmth and precision to everything she creates.

You’ll find the Bellissimo block download and a step-by-step video tutorial over on the Moda Blog. And be sure to read Joanna’s thoughts on the block—she always shares thoughtful insights about construction, fabric placement, and why the details matter.

Moda Blockheads 6: Block 5 – Dew Drops by Chelsi Stratton

This week’s Moda Blockheads 6 block comes with a breath of fresh morning air—introducing Dew Drops, a quilt block by the ever-talented Chelsi Stratton of Chelsi Stratton Designs.

If you’ve been quilting along, you know each week brings a new surprise, and a new voice—and Chelsi’s block is sure to impress. It’s the kind of block that is intriguing and may challenge your piecing skills, so take your time. It is well worth it.

Dew Drops – A Gentle Start to the Day

The Dew Drops Block combines half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles, and a central four-patch unit to create a design that is structured, yet intricate. The layout mesmerizing with shapes that gently lead your eye from the center outward.

I love my color palette this week, and want to make more of these blocks, wait, did I say that last time?
I think I say that every time, so forgive my obsessive desire to make more and more quilts! Blues, creamy neutrals, and reds added warmth and helped me stay in that vintage-faded look. I really enjoyed piecing this one—it went together smoothly, and I am happy how my points lined up.
Since I like to do things scrappy, I pieced lots of 3″ half square triangles using It’s Sew Emma’s triangle papers. This way I have an assortment ready. I cut off what I need and trim down to the size needed for each block.

Meet the Designer: Chelsi Stratton

If you’ve been in the quilting world for even a short while, you’ve likely come across Chelsi Stratton’s work. She’s a designer known for timeless patterns, warm palettes, and fabric collections she creates alongside her mother, Sherri McConnell, for Moda Fabrics.

Chelsi brings a lovely mix of tradition and fresh perspective to every design. Her patterns are approachable yet polished—perfect for both newer quilters and seasoned stitchers looking for something classic with a twist. She also shares her creative process, design tips, and quilting life across multiple platforms. Be sure to follow her and stay inspired!

Give her a follow—you’ll love the glimpse into her quilting world, family life, and her collaborations with Sherri.

Watch & Stitch Along

Head over to the Moda Blog to read more about Chelsi’s inspiration behind Dew Drops, and don’t miss the how-to video tutorial for this week’s block. Whether you’re cutting into your favorite prints or sticking with solids, there’s plenty of room to make this block your own.

Let the Dew Drops Fall

This is the kind of block that looks different with every color combo—soft and subtle, bold and graphic, or somewhere in between. Be sure to share your version using #ModaBlockheads and #ModaBlockheads6, and don’t forget to tag @modafabrics and @chelsistratton so we can all admire your work!

There’s something truly special about how this quilt is coming together—one block at a time, one stitch at a time, yet I still haven’t decided on my setting. I need to get to work on that very soon!

Until next week, happy sewing.

Blockheads 6 – Block 4 Kiley Ferons

Moda Blockheads 6: Block 4 – Cat’s Cradle by Kiley Ferons

It’s Blockheads Wednesday again, and we’ve got a fresh face joining the circle—say hello to Kiley Ferons, the designer behind this week’s block: Cat’s Cradle.

Now back to Blockheads…If you love blocks with movement and a modern twist, you’re in for a treat. Kiley’s Cat’s Cradle is playful and sharp all at once—a clever composition of half-square triangles and half-rectangle triangles that criss-cross like the string game we all played as kids. It’s balanced but dynamic, and every seam adds depth and direction.

A Playful Block with Purpose

The Cat’s Cradle block combines clean geometry with a sense of motion—those angles really do feel like loops of string pulled tight between careful fingers. The HSTs and HRTs dance with each other in a design that’s both structured and lively, perfect for adding visual interest to your quilt layout.

For mine, I leaned into soft geometrics to let the block take on a vintage feel. I’m still building my faded vintage palette, and this block was a great reminder that even subtle colors can create big movement with the right design. I can’t get enough dots, stripes and retro shirtings.

And yes, I may have stared at the finished block longer than usual… there’s something mesmerizing about how the shapes nest together, like a quilted puzzle.

Meet Kiley Ferons of Kiley’s Quilt Room

Let’s talk about the creative force behind this block—Kiley Ferons, a newer face in the Moda designer family but already a standout in the quilting world. Kiley is known for her approachable patterns, fresh aesthetic, and passion for helping quilters of all skill levels build confidence through intentional design. Kiley’s debut fabric line, Potted will be in stores October 2025.

Based in Utah, Kiley is not only a quilt pattern designer, but also a tech-savvy creative who, along with her husband created MY QUILTS APP..  that help quilters map out their projects digitally—hello, organized layouts and easy fabric planning! Keep track of, journal, and organize all your quilt projects!

You can explore more of her work and connect with her here:

Give her a follow—you’ll find tons of inspiration, helpful tips, and maybe even your next favorite pattern.

Cat’s Cradle – Tips & Tutorial

As always, Moda’s got you covered with a video tutorial walking through this week’s block. If you’re new to half-rectangle triangles or just need a refresher, it’s a great resource to have on hand. The TRI-RECS Ruler 8823753A was huge help in piecing the half rectangles. ( be sure and check out my friend Alison Dale in the video)

And don’t forget to hop over to Moda’s blog to read all things blockheads each Wednesday. it’s always fun to compare interpretations and find new ideas for your own version.

This elegant block is brought to us by the ever-gracious Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill Designs, whose soft, classic style always brings a touch of timeless charm. Sunday Best is exactly the kind of block that makes you want to slow down and enjoy the process.

A Block with Sunday Charm

The Sunday Best block pairs crisp flying geese with four-patch units, all arranged in a way that feels thoughtful and intentional—kind of like setting the table for a big family meal. The shapes are clean and balanced, but the layout has a quiet movement that keeps your eye dancing across the block.

It evokes that feeling of calm you get on a slow Sunday afternoon—everything in its place, sunlight coming through the window, and something sweet baking in the kitchen. There’s a sense of preparation and celebration built into this design. And honestly? I really like how mine turned out. So much so that I didn’t stop at just one—I made a few! And then ready for a Sunday afternoon nap!

Keeping the Vintage Vision

As I mentioned in earlier posts, I’m going for a faded, vintage look with my Blockheads 6 quilt. The soft tones I added last week are really starting to come together in a gentle wash of light. For Sunday Best, I continued with that theme—working in the reds and blues with touches of mediums. I used strips and dots to continue to work on the vintage feel.

The repeat blocks let me play with subtle shifts in color, keeping things cohesive but not too matchy. I’m not sure yet how many of them will end up in the final layout, but I love the idea of sprinkling a few throughout.

Get Inspired & Get Stitching

Anne has shared her version of Sunday Best over on the BunnyHill Blog, and you’ll definitely want to see her take on the block—it’s graceful and polished, just like her entire Bunny Hill aesthetic.

Need a little help assembling those flying geese and four-patch units? This week is my turn to do a video on the how to make the block. Check out the step-by-step video tutorial  staring ME!! to guide you through the block construction. Whether you’re sewing along at your own pace or keeping up week by week, the resources are there to make this journey joyful.

Block #3 and I made 3. I could make an entire quilt of just this block. Yes I do say that about all the blocks!
